Meat Pie

As an Australian, Andy loves meat pie.  I've never had a non-vegan meat pie, but I think we've made some pretty yummy renditions since I've lived here.  There's something not just delicious, but also comforting, about food wrapped in puff pastry.

So when I was perusing the testing blog for Carla's newest cookbook, and I noticed "Australasian Meat Pie", I knew we had to make it.

And it was glorious.  The filling was so thick and lovely -- our last few attempts at pie have been a bit, erm, runny.  So when you cut them, the filling runs out in a soupy puddle.  So this thick, gorgeous pie filling was exactly what Andy had in mind.

To up the Aussie street-cred, we served with beetroot (as well as roasty potatoes and corn on the cob).

Looks awesome. I always eat the filling first and save the pastry til the end!

That looks delicious! My favourite pre vegggie meal was a steak and cheese pie - gross I know but would be nice to have a vegan replacement!

That looks WAY better than a normal aussie meat pie! & I bet it smelled better too. Nice work getting the right consistency :)

Hmm, I don't know, can you really say it's Aussie if the beetroot isn't canned? ;)

P.S. I really don't much like canned beetroot. Roasted all the way!

That sounds awesome! Pie is so good. Pastry is just plain amazing. I was thinking about making a pie tomorrow night (it seems like such a good wintery food and boy is it winter here at the moment!) and this is the last little push I needed. I don't have a pie dish of any sort though. Hmmm...

I do like a good pie - Northeners have a similar affinity for meat pies - and that one looks like it has lovely flaky pastry, too! Where does this Aussie affection for beetroot come from, though? I've heard it mentioned before, so what's the deal?

Hannah - last night for dinner we had burgers and roasted beets, and in addition to the beautiful, fresh, roasted beets... Andy put tinned beetroot on his burger. Ack!

DJ - I don't know where it comes from, but Aussies *love* tinned beetroot on sandwiches and burgers. At fast food places, the "aussie burger" always always has beetroot on it.

That does look like a lovely and satisfying veggie meat pie. My visit to Australia, years ago, I remember having a veggie hand pie, very good but I think the pastry was too rich or something for me. I didn't feel very good after.

Mmmm yum, I love a good (vegan of course) meat pie. In the UK the Linda McCartney range has a vegan meat pie & it's great for when you can't be bothered to make your own!
