Fishing hurts.

This deadly flyer was made by my new e-friend, Matt Talbott (tubley@yahoo.com). I found him a week or so ago, when I googled "Townsville Vegan" and came across the Vegetarian Appreciation Network of Townsville. Matt has given me permission to post this up here, and encourages everyone to spread it as far and wide as possible--so print out a few copies and stick them up in conspicuous locations!

Isn't it amazing how cruelty to fish appears to be totally acceptable behavior in our society?
On Monday I had some physio therapy. When I went into the clinic I was confronted by a wall of photos of people holding beautiful big jewfish and baramundi up by the gills and mouth! A photo trophy wall! I don't know when this sort of thing started appearing strange to me. I'm sure as a kid I would have bee fascinated but now it just seems barbaric.
Maybe because the 'sport' of fishing is clearly pointless barbaric behavior?

David, that's good to hear! I was talking to my partner yesterday about that image, and he wondered what would happen if you found a kangaroo hopping around, got a hook in it's mouth and then reeled it in an let it out repeatedly. If you got charged with animal cruelty, would your defense be that it's okay to do to fish, and what's the difference? Because really, what is the difference?

I need to show this to my husband, who occasionally likes to fish. Although I try to respect his opinions, this one is hard to deal with.... great poster though. A perfect visual.

I love the random facts below - I'd be barefoot 50% of the time, too, if it weren't for all this dang snow!

Nice poster. I think part of the reason some people pass off eating fish as non cruel compared to other animals is because they think fish can't feel pain. I find this utter BS. When I was a kid and my folks would cook lobster by sticking them in a pot of boiling hot water it seemed pretty obvious to me that fish (are lobsters fish?) can feel pain. Also, some people seem to think fish aren't animals. When I tell people I'm vegetarian, almost vegan, they still ask if I eat fish. Hello, fishes are animals!

Similar to Vegan Noodle my other half still eats fish despite my attempts to wean her off it. Maybe I can show her that picture to help convince her.

Heh, if I were vegan noodle or Alec, I would go the passive aggressive route and leave a printout sitting on the desk or something for my partner to 'stumble upon'. Then they can't say you're being pushy ;)

And Alec, I was supposed to go to a friends place for dinner last night (it ended up getting cancelled), but I must have been nervous because I had a dream that I showed up and she asked "so you eat fish, right?" In my dream, I ended up eating plain brown rice. I'm sure when we reschedule it will be better than that!
