read this!

Here is a great article about commoditization of food, and the impacts it has on both the overfed and the hungry of the world.

Read it!

Updated to add a snippet:

"Our choices are not entirely our own because, even in a supermarket, the menu is crafted not by our choices, nor by the seasons, nor where we find ourselves, nor by the full range of apples available, nor by the full spectrum of available nutrition and tastes but by the power of food corporations."

That's my emphasis, by the way, because I think it's the key. Talk about food for thought.

Interesting - I liked "the ancient and venerable Rambo". I remember hearing from an NZ apple farmer (on holiday in BrisVegas) saying that our apples in supermarkets suck 'cause of the transportation.

Now that I think about it - I don't think I've ever had an apple that wasn't from a supermarket chain/market? What's it like to pick an apple from a tree? :)

Interesting article.

Being in Queensland you are probably like us in South Africa slowly watching the drought stricken areas grow bigger and bigger. The main culprits are the U.S. and China so we sadly have no hope unless they get with the program. The U.S. are beginning to take steps but isn't it too late ?

Haha I went up to Ithaca a few years ago-- in the summer-- when I was college searching. I fell in love with the town. I decided I was definitely going to Cornell... until my mom reminded me that the weather would soon become bitter cold, with snow galore. After that, I decided New York was a great place... to VISIT!

I also feel this way about the environment. It's greta for individuals to recycle and take food home in reusable bags, but change/policy needs to happen at the governmental level.

definitely makes you think about our food industry in a whole new light - thanks for linking this article; quite interesting!

That's pretty much why I blog, in a nutshell. The lack of care that governments have for the health and lives of their citizens, as exemplified in their coddling of corporations, never ceases to astound and horrify me.
