Though not quite as big as The Big Mango in Bowen, these delicious specimens we picked up from the market are probably as close as you’ll get with an edible mango.
They are Kent Mangos, and they are massive. Pretty much the size of my face.
And they are tasty. Super juicy—dripping down your elbows juicy. The smallest seed imaginable. Not stringy. Close to the seed, the flesh is a little fuzzy, like shark skin, Andy said. Not unpleasant, just tickles the tongue a little. The flavour is closer to a Bowen than to any of the asian varieties. Almost a cross between a Bowen and last year’s favourite, the Piango.
A perfect treat for two hungry, thirsty vegans (well, one vegan, one opportunistic omnivore) after a bike ride home from uni on a windy day.
There's only another month of mango season left. That makes me a sad panda!
